Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, you'll find a demand for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
